Interview with the Host–Pre-Election Show: October 24th, 2008

November 7, 2008 | Leave a Comment

The Sound Authors Show on October 24th was full of amazing pre-
election interviews. I asked the host Dr. Kent Gustavson to tell me a
little about this show…

• Our White House looking In, Looking out is a childrens
book. How do you feel this book will interest children to learn more
about our nations history and the white house?

This is a fantastic book, filled with tons of stories and pictures…
I love it right now, let alone what I would have thought as a kid!
There’s so much talk about politics, and so little in the media about
the most famous house in the country… And they promised to have a
special update after the election on their website:
www.ourwhitehouse.org

• You spoke to David Mendell, author of Obama: From Promise
to Power. From your interview and reading his book did you learn
anything new about Obama that the mainstream media has not already
touched on?

What an honor it was to speak to David Mendell! His book is a
bestseller already, and is certain to fly off the shelves after
Election Day, when Obama wins the election. He really provides a
candid insight into the man before he was well known, before he was a
media phenom. And the author was at his right elbow when everything
happened. And the story of Obama’s life is riveting. The mainstream
media has pretty much touched on everything in Obama’s entire
history, but I think Mendell is really able to add the personal
touches that only a friend to Obama and a journalist on his trail
before he was famous could add…

• How do you feel `Barack Obama: Son of Promise, Child of
Hope’ written by Nikki Grimes can inspire children?

Nikki Grimes is, of course, an incredible artist with many awards,
and with dozens of gorgeous books under her belt. But she talks about
this one in a different way. It was a unique challenge for her to
write this book, and she did a masterful job. After reading Mendell’s
precise biography, reading Grimes’ children’s book about Obama is
extraordinary. The pictures are larger than life, and the story is
about a simple boy named Barry that goes through all sorts of
trouble, but rises above it, and then, at the end of the book, of
course, inspires hope in others.

Interview with the Host–Halloween Show: October 31th, 2008

November 7, 2008 | Leave a Comment

The Halloween show was a real treat! I asked the host Dr. Kent some
questions about his interview with the guests….

• Most people consider cemeteries to be a little eerie. Did
your interview Marilyn Yalom change your perspective on this?

No, of course not! Cemeteries terrify me! But I suppose that I think
of them at night with all of the spirits lurking… It’s a wonderful
thing to think about resting places as gardens, and as wonderful
places for families to go to remember their loved ones. Yalom’s
journey took her to hundreds of cemeteries, and it’s fascinating to
read the stories she found. That’s what cemeteries are really all
about — stories. But I will still always be scared in them — that’s
why we always portray them so lovingly on Halloween!

• What did you learn about Hollywood and the horror movie
genre from speaking to Ellie Cornell?

I have found, since our interview, that many people are HUGE fans of
Ellie Cornell, which I didn’t know before, and I will have to go back
and watch the Halloween movies. I’m not a huge fan of horror movies,
since watching Night of the Living Dead as a kid when my parents were
away. That was the most terrifying night of my life! But Ellie has a
great sense of humor, and it was an honor to speak with her, and to
hear about all of her aspirations, and about her love of the horror
genre!

• Can you tell us a little more about Paul Mullen’s book
drive campaign?

Paul has been on the show twice, and it has been a pleasure hearing
from him in between appearances as well. He is devoted to literacy,
an incredibly important problem in the United States. It was, of
course, fun to hear him read a scary story from his book, and we look
forward to hearing from him how his literacy campaign spreads.

• What genre of music is Marybeth D’Amico’s? What is it about
her music that interests you?

I came across Marybeth through her friend and sometime co-musician
Markus Rill, who was also on the show. I heard her music through him,
and was immediately struck by the intensity of her voice. Her music
is contemporary folk, but her voice is a true original. Part Texas,
part Ireland. Part storyteller, part activist. Her songs are
fascinating, and chronicle unusual characters… And I love any
musicians playing Americana in Germany — my fiance is German, and I
am bi-lingual in German, so I have a soft spot for that cross-
cultural connection…
